Why We Choose the Scarf Bunionectomy
Not every bunion needs the same operation. When appropriate for a patient's deformity, one of our preferred techniques is the Scarf bunionectomy because it provides powerful correction while creating a stable construct that can allow patients to begin protected weight bearing relatively quickly.
A Technique Shaped by New York City
Our surgical approach was shaped by training in New York City, where patients often needed to get back on their feet quickly. The Scarf bunionectomy provides strong, stable correction while allowing many patients to begin protected weightbearing early in recovery.
Stable, Powerfull Correction
The Scarf osteotomy provides excellent correction with a large area of bone-to-bone contact. Screw fixation creates a stable construct designed to maintain correction as the bone heals.
Thoughtful Incision Placement & Cosmetic Closure
How the foot looks after surgery matters, too. We carefully plan both the location of the incision and the way it is closed to make the resulting scar as inconspicuous as possible.
Instead of placing the incision directly on top of the great-toe joint as most of our peers in north west Ohio do, we use a medial approach, positioning it along the inner side of the foot and out of the direct line of sight when the foot is viewed from above.
At the end of the procedure, we use a subcuticular plastic-surgery–style closure, placing the final sutures beneath the skin. This avoids the traditional external “railroad track” suture marks and is intended to produce a fine, less noticeable scar as the incision heals.
